Maria had been filing a Schedule C with the same H&R Block storefront for three years. Net profit was real ($84K), but her tax bill kept climbing and nobody had ever sat down and explained why her checks to the IRS kept getting bigger. Move 5: QBI. A non-SSTB pass-through at this income level cleanly gets the 20% deduction. Her previous preparer had taken it at the entity level but missed the wage-based limit interaction. Another $2,400 captured.
Total tax savings year one: $14,180. Maria reinvested it in a second wax melter and 60 days of paid Etsy Ads. Year two she's pacing $240K revenue.

Etsy automatically collects and remits sales tax in most states under marketplace facilitator laws. You usually don't owe it on Etsy-channel sales. But if you also sell through your own Shopify or in person, those channels are on you. Track them separately.

Yes — the home-office deduction (Form 8829) lets you deduct a percentage of your rent or mortgage interest, utilities, internet, and home insurance based on the square footage used exclusively and regularly for the business. Etsy sellers with a dedicated studio, photo room, or storage area usually qualify.
